digiKidz™ Staff:
Nola Soliman
Camp Director
By starting digiKidzT technology camp in 2007, I combined my 3 loves: teaching, filmmaking, and technology. I have taught for 18 years, with experience in Sydney, Australia as well as 11 years in Oakville.
I presently teach Grades 7 & 8 with the Halton District School Board. Much of my classroom experience has been in the area of Intermediate Mathematics, where I enjoy using multimedia projects to engage students and to enhance their understanding of curriculum material. I facilitate both Halton Board and ETFO initiatives to promote best practices in classroom instruction.
I promote student participation in Technology Clubs, and currently run a LEGO Robotics club at my school. I have participated at the Halton Skills Competition for both LEGO Robotics and Digital Film-making. I was coach for the digiKidz robotics team which won the Spirit award for the 2009 FLL competition in Mississauga. I currently run LEGO Robotic and Digital Film workshops through the Town of Oakville libraries.
For the last 8 years, as part of the Language Arts program, my students have been involved in making short videos, with many submitting their projects to the Canadian Heritage national video competition, "Racism, Stop It!"
I am a member of LIFT (the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto), where I attend film-related classes as well as LIFT functions. I am a member of the First Weekend Club, which promotes Canadian films.
I look forward to an exciting 2012 digiKidzT season, building on the success of our fifth year serving Oakville and area families.
Mike Zdero
Camp Counsellor: Digital Film-making & Stop Motion Animation
My name is Mike Zdero. I have had an interest in film for most of my life- movies have always captivated me but it was in high school that I really began to look at films as more than just entertainment. I have had an extensive experience in many types of media and in the many roles involved in producing films.
Under my company Dark Blue Productions I have produced many films including short dramas, music videos, documentaries, television broadcasts, stop motion and animations. I have worked on everything from scriptwriting/storyboarding, to filming, lighting, directing, as well as sound design and editing.
I have also had experience with teaching media and film to others, working as a tutor for grade 11 Media Studies class at Abbey Park High School in 2007. As well as working as a camp counselor at digiKidz camp since 2007. I look forward to another exciting summer at digiKidz camp!
In September I will be entering my final year of film studies in the Media Arts course at Sheridan Colleges Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning.
Alan Sardana
Camp Counsellor: Digital Film-making & Stop Motion Animation
Hello! My name is Alan Sardana and I am a grade 11 student at Abbey Park High School. I am a very creative individual and am extremely passionate towards film.
I’ve always found film and video to be a great way for me to express my ideas and share my opinions. Because of this, I am very motivated and self-directed when working with film and am continually working and learning new techniques to enhance my skills. I have produced several short works, many of which have won awards, including Best Picture at Abbey Park’s Film Competition, “Take 48”.
This summer will be my second year working at DigiKidz and I am truly excited to see what masterpieces can be created this summer!
Nick Whittaker
Camp Counsellor: Flash animation & LEGO Robotics
Hey, I’m Nick Whittaker, Grade 11 student at Oakville Trafalgar High School. I’ve been working with Lego robotics since Grade 6, and have mentored Lego Robotics teams since grade 9. Currently, I mentor 3 FIRST Lego League (FLL) teams at E.J. James Public School, and am a member of the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team at OTHS.
Back when I competed in FLL, the four-member Lego team I was on won silver at the Ontario provincial tournament, and this year the OTHS FRC team travelled down to Atlanta, Georgia for the World Championship!
My experiences with Lego have opened so many doors, and have led me to attend amazing events, meet cool people and even travel. I’ve had an incredibly fun time the whole way through. I hope that through digiKidz I can help kids open the same doors for themselves, and see them truly enjoy the unique feeling of seeing something of their own creation come to life.
Elizabeth Smurlick
Camp Counsellor: Digital Film-making & Stop Motion Animation
My name's Elizabeth, and I'm looking forward to my third summer at digiKidz! I just completed my third year at the University of Toronto. I'm working toward a BBA with a Management Specialist and Communication, Culture and Information Technology (CCIT) Major.
I love to get involved and create. I was Publisher, Editor and Writer of my high school's newspaper, Fashion/Sewing Club Coordinator and leader in several clubs including Link Crew, Synergy, Oakville's Teen Advisory Group, Oakville Teen Book Club and Oakville's Teen Art Advisory Council. My writing has been published in the Oakville Beaver, Ridge Report and Teen Voices. My art was chosen for display in the 2004 Olympics in Athens Greece and I have won several awards and scholarships. I have also been involved in organizing Halton's Write2Express Awards, and presenting awards to recipients. Last year, I won an award in "Design Thinking" for top performance in a Sheridan College course, while enrolled in a joint program between Sheridan College and the University of Toronto.
I have a strong background in education. I have been employed as an elementary tutor with the Halton District School Board, a mentor for high school students and a Residence Peer Academic Leader (rezPAL) for first year university students.
I also love to make videos. I was enrolled in communication courses in high school, and film courses in university. When I have spare time, I often use this time to make videos too. My films have included stop motion animation and music videos, among others.
I am very excited to become involved in digiKidz camp this summer. I look forward to combining my experience with art, teaching and digital film making to create a fun and safe summer experience for digiKidz campers.
Steph Schoenhoff
Camp Counsellor: Digital Film-making
I have been involved in DigKidz since 2007 and absolutely love the environment and work created at the camp. I have been a film making, digital animation and digital story-telling counselor for two years and am so excited to return!
I have a passion for visual art and have been studying studio art in school, and outside of school for as long as I can remember. My enthusiasm for film started by making amateur home videos but then expanded as Nola introduced film and editing to me in elementary school!
I always have the best time at DigiKidz getting to know the campers and can’t wait to see what summer 2010 has in store!
Zain Abiddin
Graphic Designer
I got involved in art and really developed a passion for it at the age of seven when my grandma bought me my first sketch book and a set of color pencils as a birthday present. I started drawing cartoons off of t-shirts, magazines, books, cereal boxes and pretty much anything that I could get my hands on. This became a hobby which received a lot of admiration from friends, family and teachers. Over time I moved from drawing cartoons to drawing portraits of family members, friends and famous figures with the emphasis on making my work as realistic as possible. Later, at University and after taking a multimedia course, I became interested in graphic design, marketing and photography. I started creating logos, advertisements, and other promotional materials for companies around the GTA. I learned about digiKidz through Nola Soliman who was also my elementary school teacher.
Upon learning more about digiKidz, I am really excited to be involved. I absolutely love the concept of young children getting the opportunity to explore the wonders of media through advanced technology. A camp where children are promoted to express creativity and imagination through film and animation is just amazing. As a graphic designer for this camp I am responsible for taking care of the promotional materials as well as assisting with the overall vision of digiKidz camp, in the form of creative media.
