digiKidz™ Staff:
Nola Soliman
Camp Director
By starting a kids' technology camp in 2007, I combine my 2 loves: teaching children and film-making.
I have taught for 18 years, with experience in Sydney, Australia as well as 10 years in Oakville. I presently teach Grade 6 with the Halton District School Board.
Much of my classroom experience has been in the area of Intermediate Mathematics, where I enjoy using multimedia projects to engage students and to enhance their understanding of curriculum material. I facilitate both Halton Board and ETFO initiatives to promote best practices in classroom instruction. I also facilitate LEGO Robotics Clubs at my school during the academic year, promoting LEGO Robotics in the Junior and Intermedite grades for both girls and boys. At the school level, I promote student participation in Technology Clubs, and at the Halton Skills Competition for both LEGO Robotics and Digital Film-making.
For the last 7 years, as part of the Language Arts program, my students have been involved in making short videos, with many submitting their projects to the Canadian Heritage national video competition, "Racism , Stop It!"
I am a member of LIFT (the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto), where I attend film-related classes as well as LIFT functions,. I am a member of the First Weekend Club, which serves to promote Canadian films. I am also a member of a locally-based woman's networking group, Xposay.
I look forward to an exciting 2010 digiKidz season, building on the success of our third year.
Mike Zdero
Camp Counsellor: Digital Film-making & Stop Motion Animation
My name is Mike Zdero. I have had an interest in film for most of my life- movies have always captivated me but it was in high school that I really began to look at films as more than just entertainment. I have had an extensive experience in many types of media and in the many roles involved in producing films.
Under my company Dark Blue Productions I have produced many films including short dramas, music videos, documentaries, television broadcasts, stop motion and animations. I have worked on everything from scriptwriting/storyboarding, to filming, lighting, directing, as well as sound design and editing.
I have also had experience with teaching media and film to others, working as a tutor for grade 11 Media Studies class at Abbey Park High School in 2007. As well as working as a camp counselor at digiKidz camp since 2007. I look forward to another exciting summer at digiKidz camp!
In September I will be entering my final year of film studies in the Media Arts course at Sheridan Colleges Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning.
Evelyn Wainewright
Camp Counsellor: LEGO Robotics & Flash Animation
My name is Evelyn Wainewright and I’m in grade 12 at Oakville Trafalgar High School. I have been involved in Lego Robotics since grade 6 and I can’t wait to work with digiKidz again this summer!
My robotics experience includes competing in both the FIRST Lego League (FLL) and the Halton Skills Competition during my middle school years at both the regional and provincial levels. During high school, I joined the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team and took on the position of Team Captain in grade 10. As part of the high school robotics program, I went back to my middle school to mentor the Lego Robotics teams each year in addition to volunteering at regional and provincial competitions.
In 2008 I ran the Halton Robotics Leadership Retreat and the Halton Robotics Association to help promote communication and collaboration among robotics teams in Halton. Last year, I traveled with my FRC team to the FIRST World Championships after qualifying at the Waterloo Regional. While in Atlanta for the competition, I was able to see the FLL Championship and it really reinforced just how valuable a robotics experience is for all ages.
In the fall of 2009, I was the mentor for the first digiKidz FLL team "Kamikaze Watermelons". At the Halton Peel Regional, the Kamikaze Watermelons were awarded the Spirit Award. I was honoured with my second Young Mentor Award for my efforts with the team.
I hope to combine the values that FIRST and FLL teach with my own unique teaching style to allow roboteers to learn all about the many aspects of Lego Robotics. I look forward to working with digiKidz again in the summer of 2010; I know it will be a great program!
Zain Abiddin
Graphic Designer
I got involved in art and really developed a passion for it at the age of seven when my grandma bought me my first sketch book and a set of color pencils as a birthday present. I started drawing cartoons off of t-shirts, magazines, books, cereal boxes and pretty much anything that I could get my hands on. This became a hobby which received a lot of admiration from friends, family and teachers. Over time I moved from drawing cartoons to drawing portraits of family members, friends and famous figures with the emphasis on making my work as realistic as possible. Later, at University and after taking a multimedia course, I became interested in graphic design, marketing and photography. I started creating logos, advertisements, and other promotional materials for companies around the GTA. I learned about digiKidz through Nola Soliman who was also my elementary school teacher.
Upon learning more about digiKidz, I am really excited to be involved. I absolutely love the concept of young children getting the opportunity to explore the wonders of media through advanced technology. A camp where children are promoted to express creativity and imagination through film and animation is just amazing. As a graphic designer for this camp I am responsible for taking care of the promotional materials as well as assisting with the overall vision of digiKidz camp, in the form of creative media.
Cory Sulpizi
Webmaster, Camp Counsellor: Flash animation & LEGO Robotics
My name is Cory Sulpizi and I am in Grade 10 at Oakville Trafalgar High School.
I've been working with Adobe Flash since Grade 5. I started by self teaching myself using online tutorials, and now use my skills to create online Flash programs and online Flash games, and am really looking forward to sharing my knowledge with kids. I know that it is a very valuable skill to learn, and is an industry that is currently thriving all over the web, being very popular for entertainment, websites and sharing media.
I am also involved in the FIRST Robotics competition (FRC) at Oakville Trafalgar High School on Team 1334, where I work with Flash Animation, 3D animation and web design to help spread the message of FIRST and advertise our team over the world wide web.
I look forward to helping kids find their creativity through Flash and LEGO robotics, and look forward to seeing many bright young minds at digiKidz this summer.
Alan Sardana
Camp Counsellor: Digital Film-making & Stop Motion Animation
Hello! My name is Alan Sardana and I am a grade 11 student at Abbey Park High School. I am a very creative individual and am extremely passionate towards film.
I’ve always found film and video to be a great way for me to express my ideas and share my opinions. Because of this, I am very motivated and self-directed when working with film and am continually working and learning new techniques to enhance my skills. I have produced several short works, many of which have won awards, including Best Picture at Abbey Park’s Film Competition, “Take 48”.
This summer will be my second year working at DigiKidz and I am truly excited to see what masterpieces can be created this summer!
